If your girlfriend is considering abortion and you’re hoping to use your insurance to pay for the procedure, it’s important to know that insurance plans typically won’t provide coverage for girlfriends. Instead, insurance will cover spouses and dependents (like children), depending on the type of coverage you have.

How Much Does an Abortion Cost?

The cost of an abortion depends on how far along your girlfriend is in the pregnancy. For example, earlier in pregnancy, abortion costs average around $800, while later on in pregnancy, the costs can range from $1,500- $2,000.

The price difference reflects the difficulty and risks that come with earlier abortions versus later abortions. Later on in pregnancy, the fetus is much larger and more developed, and later-term abortions must use surgical instruments, like forceps.

What’s the Emotional Cost of Abortion?

The financial cost of abortion isn’t the only element to consider—there’s also the emotional cost.

A study looking into the link between abortion and mental health complications found that it’s clear that “at least some women do have significant mental health issues that are caused, triggered, aggravated, or complicated by their abortion experience.”

In addition, if your girlfriend feels at all pressured into an abortion or has a preexisting mental health condition and/or conflicting moral beliefs, she is more likely to experience a mental health complication after an abortion.
