Did you recently have an abortion and think you might be experiencing an infection? Are you still pregnant and considering an abortion?

Either way, knowing the warning signs of infection is essential since infection is a complication that can occur with both types of abortion (medical and surgical). This article will highlight the primary warning signs of post-abortion infection.

However, if you’ve had an abortion and are concerned that you may be experiencing an infection or other complication, it’s critical to seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Be sure to tell the healthcare provider that you recently had an abortion so they know how best to assess your situation.

Warning Signs of Post-Abortion Infection

Medical and surgical abortions can both cause an infection. If you’ve had an abortion and notice any of the following symptoms, you might have an infection:

  • Fever: A persistent fever above 100.4°F (38°C) is a common sign of infection. If you develop a post-abortion fever that lasts more than 24 hours, it is crucial to seek medical attention. This is a part of your immune system’s response to an infection.
  • Severe Abdominal Pain: Abortion causes abdominal cramping during and after the procedure (depending on the type). However, severe or increasing abdominal pain that does not improve with over-the-counter pain relief could signify an infection or other complications.
  • Foul-Smelling Vaginal Discharge: Vaginal discharge should not have a strong, unpleasant odor. Foul-smelling discharge may indicate an infection.
  • Heavy Bleeding: Abortion causes vaginal bleeding, but it should gradually decrease. If you experience heavy bleeding that soaks through more than one sanitary pad per hour for two consecutive hours or pass large blood clots, it’s essential to seek prompt medical treatment.
